  19. Subject: "Fax Communication Error 8:"
  20.  
  21. Situation:
  22. ==========
  23. When attempting to send a fax, the message "Fax Communication Error: 8"
  24. appears and the event fails. This problem may occur regularly or 
  25. intermittently, and the same message may appear as the event status in 
  26. the WinFax send log.
  27.  
  28. Solution:
  29. =========
  30. Review the following list of potential causes and solutions to resolve 
  31. the problem.
  32.  
  33. a)  If a dial prefix is required for your location or type of phone 
  34.     system, ensure that you are using the correct prefix. Click the 
  35.     Options button in the Send Fax dialog. Check that Use Dial Prefix is 
  36.     enabled and the correct prefix is specified.
  37.  
  38. b)  Most fax/modems have an incoming jack for the fax line, and an 
  39.     outgoing jack for a telephone or headset that is used in a shared 
  40.     fax/voice setup. If your fax line is not plugged into the incoming 
  41.     jack on the fax/modem, the communication error will occur. If the 
  42.     jacks are not labeled, refer to your fax/modem manual or contact the 
  43.     manufacturer.

  45. c)  Ensure that the fax line is securely connected to the incoming fax/modem 
  46.     jack, and to the wall jack where the line originates.
  47.  
  48. d)  Certain inexpensive cables are not reliable for connecting external 
  49.     fax/modems to the computer's serial port. Use cables labeled "RTS/CTS", 
  50.     "25 conductor" or "high quality" with external fax/modems.
  51.  
  52. e)  If your fax/modem has an AT&T chipset, add the following intitialization 
  53.     string to the WinFax Fax/Modem Setup dialog:

  55.         AT&F&C1&D2\\J0\Q1W0S7=90\
  56.  
  57.     Check the documentation for your fax/modem to determine the chipset 
  58.     manufacturer.
  59.  
  60. If the problem persists after trying the solutions listed above, perform the 
  61. following:
  62.  
  63. 1.  Start up the fax software program that came bundled with your fax/modem.
  64.  
  65.     You will have to install the program if it is not already set up on your 
  66.     computer.
  67.  
  68. 2.  Send a basic fax using the program (refer to the user documentation for 
  69.     details).
  70.  
  71.     - If the event fails due to a communication error, a hardware compatibility 
  72.       problem exists with your fax/modem. Consult the fax/modem documentation 
  73.       or manufacturer for assistance.
  74.  
  75.     - If the event is successful, the problem exists between the fax/modem and 
  76.       WinFax. Contact Delrina Technical Support for assistance.

  78. Note:  The test fax may be unsuccessful initially for various reasons, such as 
  79.        line noise or a busy signal. In these cases, the event remains pending
  80.        and will be retried automatically by most fax programs. If the event 
  81.        fails due to a communication error it does not remain pending and will 
  82.        not be retried automatically.
